Drinking the Kool-Aid

Hello fellow Multiversians!

It has been indicated to me that my posts and writings have of late become a dark and brooding miasma.

And so... In looking to the New Year and because I do not wish to offend or turn away ANYONE from my posts, I have decided to make a few changes in the way I view the world. No longer will I viciously attack and address with frustration the things I encounter which might cause me agitation or anger or fill me with the incipient desire to bloviate at top volume until I turn blue in the face.

Nope. No more. You might say I am drinking the Kool-Aid, taking the Blue Pill, from here on out I will BE Pollyanna and view the world only through rose colored glasses and think of the world only as a wonderful place to be and to live and I will accept everything that every commercial tells me is real and believe everything that springs forth from every politicians mouth regardless of the ludicrousness of it all.

To that end, there are a few terms and definitions that will be changed here and any other version or term will not be allowed.

For example:
The FISCAL CLIFF will now be referred to as “that minor economic speed bump that was after all needed”.

GUN CONTROL will only be referred to as “removing the scissors from the children’s hands”.

Wars in the Middle East will only be referred to as “Ahmed’s Really Bad Day”.

Wicked Weather will be referred to as “An over abundance of Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows.”

Apocalyptic thinking and Doomsday Preparation will now be “That Grumpy Bear Syndrome”.

Yep folks, I can already feel the stress leaving my body! My mind is free and my cares are floating away on a slight wind reminiscent of the tang of sea salt and freshly washed sheets blowing in a warm breeze!

After all, just breathing isn’t living!

Like Pollyanna herself said: “What men and women need is encouragement. Their natural resisting powers should be strengthened, not weakened…. Instead of always harping on a man’s faults, tell him of his virtues. Try to pull him out of his rut of bad habits. Hold up to him his better self, his REAL self that can dare and do and win out!

Why didn’t I think of this before? I mean, when you look for the bad, expecting it, you will get it.

When you know you will find the good—you will get that!

This is so LIBERATING!

All you nasty worriers and thinkers out there can just go fly a kite! The world IS a wonderful place and you can just go kiss a beehive if you don’t think so! But don’t linger over the hive... I really don’t want anyone to be injured.

Pish posh.

Marching toward a Mutant Soldier

And the hits just keep on coming. Daily and I DO mean daily, I read articles and glean new information illustrating how real world technology is rapidly catching up and in some ways surpassing the world of science fiction.

In Every Purpose under Heaven, my in development Sci-Fi novel starring Culver Bishop, the idea of enhancing the human condition by using nano-nerve cell technology is introduced and explored. While this is not a new concept, this idea is one that has a real world connection and, if you look closely, you can begin to track the reality and on-going development of real world applications of similar sciences.

Specifically, I am referring to the existing and on-going development by government entities like DARPA and engaged scientists to develop a “better soldier” aka “mutant”.

Read the WIRED article here discussing the work of scientist Andrew Herr:

Mutant powered soldiers. X-Men. The Hulk. Spiderman.

So many so called sci-fi characters some to mind that at first you might be tempted to brush this article aside as just another egghead plant or psyop like diversion to keep the beguiled sheeple-society entertained.

Not so fast, says I.

Read further into the article and you can see that as far back as at least ten years ago DARPA and the Pentagon were already researching ways to enhance their soldiers. This has been going on for quite some time and I would bet you dollars to donuts that in many ways what they have accomplished is already in use.

You might say SO WHAT? Why should I be concerned?

Maybe you shouldn’t be. I don’t know. That’s up to you to decide. As for me, I love this stuff not only for its stand alone weirdness and brilliance, but also and mostly because I am a writer. I can use this stuff to improve my own tech in my stories.

But consider what it is these scientists are actually doing before you decide to ignore it.

Behavior modification, diet changes, and even the use of medications all seem on the surface to be par for the course with what the military would do to enhance their soldiers. And these things are mostly acceptable to the general public.

But then you start reading that the researchers are also using shock therapy to modify specific brain patterns, using DNA alteration via viruses or chemicals, and even installing bionic like implants (read cyborg). You start to see that what they are doing is truly beyond what normal human beings might see as the invisible moral line of acceptability.

Still, you might say so what? You might say you do not personally agree with this stuff and that you still have the power of the vote to get congressmen in office who can stop this before it gets out of control.

And, maybe you are right. But consider this: in many ways, more ways than you or I can even imagine, the scientists, the government, the military, and others, are using psychological operations, behavioral modification and social engineering to change the views and objections of the public and many times without us even knowing what the hell they are doing.

How many commercials do you see at the movies (yea, commercials at the movies... who’d a thunk it just a few years ago), commercials that encourage our young people to “Be all you can be”? Or to join the Navy, or Marines? And these are not the only methods they are using. I would bet that nearly EVERYTHING you encounter on radio and TV and on the internet is in some way shape or form encouraging you (and I say encouraging lightly) to do whatever it is the Powers That Be want you to do.

So how long before the majority of people will just “go along” with all this mutant soldier stuff?

Now, don’t start thinking I am a bleeding heart liberal who wants to disarm everybody in sight except for the folks I deem at this moment to be in line with my way of thinking of and perceiving the world. I am NOT.

I believe that Reagan’s take on the military is right on, that the military is not there to promote war; rather it is there to be prepared for peace. I want to have a strong military, though I wish we didn’t have to use them so much and I hope for the day we never have to use them at all.

But it is creepy sometimes to watch how the military marketing could so easily sway an impressionable mind.

And the above WIRED article speaks to even more nefarious methods of garnering support from the masses. There are so many quotes from this article I could use to highlight my point that the folks in charge are using “behavioral modification” and “social engineering” in order to get what they want out of the next generation, but for now just read this one where Herr states about college students use of performance enhancing methods:
“Seventy to 80 percent of upperclassman have at least once taken these drugs illegally to get better grades,” he says. “If the younger generation in our country is more comfortable with this, then that would make the use of these kinds of things in society, and by extension the military, very different.”

And believe me, they so called “younger” generation is in so many ways a prime target for anything more coming out that would help them get better grades, or, shall we be so crude, “perform better” in any area of life (Viagra). We have blazed the trail for them.

And, if you think that scientist and the military are only thinking benevolently about all this and would stop just short of creating a world where the mythical “THEY” control all of us, just look at this quote from Herr: Herr realized it could be altered biologically. “All of sudden the Matrix made sense,” Herr says.

The MATRIX suddenly makes sense to a guy in charge of creating new methods of making a MUTANT human being via chemical, behavioral and stimulative means.

It seems that “THEY” are already well on their way to getting what they want. A willing society open to the ideas of genetically/behaviorally/chemically modified human mutants taking to the battlefield (and many other “fields”) and before long dominating the pack.

Nothing sacry there, right?

Answer this: How soon before what these “scientists” have created will turn around and, like Frankenstein’s monster, bite the master’s hand?

The article admits that: “Other countries are also interested in these areas but are not so open as the U.S. about what they are doing, so it is difficult to know exactly what is going on in many cases,”

Do we know who these other countries are? Do we trust them? Do you trust China, or Russia, or North Korea to only use this type of technology in limited ways? Do you think they have not already harnessed these types of technologies and perhaps have already deployed Advanced Mutant Human beings, using them to infiltrate the halls of power within our country, our media, our government, our military?

The genie is probably already out of the bottle on this one folks. And like Pandora, this box will have many surprises left to show us.

Later. Stay frosty.

End of year report

Hey folks. Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and are looking forward to a most Happy New Year. And looking back over this last year, aren’t we really due for a good year?

How many of you are just plain SICK of the news lately?

Fiscal Cliff.
Gun control.
Government corruption.
Inflation (or the reported supposed lack of inflation - did you know the “official” government reports on inflation no longer include those pesky and unimportant things such as energy (gas, heating oil) and food??).
Wars in the Middle East.
Mayan Doomsday Apocalypse

What bugs me the most is that so much of the so called news is just bogus. If you want a real assessment of what is really going on in the world you have to sift and sort through all the reports (and I do mean from ALL the sources) and then go research alternative sources for additional input and insight and then and only then can you begin to draw conclusions.

And in the end after all of that... it’s still just a steaming pile of depressing poo-poo that you would have been better off never reading at all.

I can hear you readers now... “Hey Paul... that’s not very Christmas like... that’s just a big fat downer! You’re a big fat downer!”

I know, right??!!

But that’s where my mind leads me today.

Don’t misunderstand. I had a wonderful Christmas. I celebrated with family, we had great food and some good booze, we shared gifts and traded stories, and over arching all of this we remembered the reason for the season (as they say).

But coming back to work and down off the high of the holiday I see that nothing... NOTHING... has changed. Oh, I am a big boy. I did NOT expect things to change.

But it never ceases to amaze me how stark the contrast is between the IDEA and exercise of the Christmas holiday with the reality of the world we live in.

Paul, come on,” I hear you whine. “It’s been a long couple of weeks. Can you please explain what the hell you mean by all that jibber jabber?”

All right... I’ll spoon feed you little birdies.

The “real world” is not the same as what the marketers would have us believe when they create a fake world of Christmas “magic” through commercials and with what the politicians would have us believe it is.

That’s all. It’s that simple. And I know that most of you understand that and are just as depressed and/or pissed off about it as I am. (For the record I am not depressed about it... I came to grips LONG ago with this distinction...)

But I AM pissed off about it all.

Because it doesn’t HAVE to be so different.

The idea of the real world doesn’t HAVE to be such a bleak thought that we get pissed off about how different it is from our “ideal” dream of what the world could be.

An ideal (utopian) world will never exist in this realm and I know that, but when did the divergence from the “ideal world” and the “acceptable real world”, or the reasonable facsimile of acceptable, become so great? Was it always this way and I just refused to believe it? Is it just because I am getting old?

Or... is the real world really getting that much worse?

I don’t know. I have my ideas, but I didn’t really want to write a persuasive essay today. I just wanted to rant for a minute and maybe get you all to thinking.

I just get so sick of hearing all the lies of the politicians spread out to the masses repeated and regurgitated by a willing and greedy media eaten up by a gullible and hungry society to again be regurgitated and consumed by their innocent children and echoed back as truth and proof to the politicians that what they are doing is all really working so that the echo chamber starts all over again ad infinitum.

Sorry, I don’t mean to get all Grinchy on you and ruin your eggnog hangover but it really gets old seeing the repetitive nature of this incredibly washed out and neglected society.

America was once a great nation. We still are to some extent, and we still could be if we could only stop with all the lies. The way things are going people will end up banning everything they are afraid of and label ANYTHING that they see as ANTI-their-ideas as a bad egg because they may cause other divisive ideas to spring up.

I really don’t want the future to be me sitting around the fire on Christmas Eve telling my grandkids that we used to be able to read the Bible and we used to have a great nation.

How depressing would that be?

Once upon a time we were free to read the Bible.
Once upon a time there was a Constitution and a Bill of Rights, and we all believed in it.
Once upon a time we had leaders who were able to rise above their mistakes and shortcomings as flawed human beings and find ways to make these ideas work without having to resort to lies.
Once upon a time, there was truth in the world...
But we chose not to believe it.
We let it go.
We forgot to carry the light.

(sigh)... I hope it's not like that.

Later... and hope you have a Happy New Year or whatever. Blah...

An unexpected post

Hey folks. So I have had a crazy week. Org changes at work had me on pins and needles for a bit, but... I still have a day job. So there is that.

I am VERY tired today... for good reason. I was able to attend the midnight premiere of THE HOBBIT last night/this morning. And... it was EXCELLENT! Well worth it. But my mind is MUSH today... a little bit bebothered and confusticated one might say.

More like a grocer than a burglar...
Before the movie there were a ton of great previews and I can say confidently that 2013 will be a great year for SCI-FI movies. OBLIVION, AFTER EARTH, STAR TREK and many other new movies really REALLY whetted my appetite for upcoming cinematic extravaganzas.

I know I say this a lot... but it IS true that even I will have a new sci-fi offering coming out very very soon. Romy Malloy is complete and ready for release as soon as the cover art is complete. We are NOT going to rush this as the cover is obviously the first thing you see and as we all know first impressions mean a lot and many folks really do judge the books they read by the cover and a picture is worth a thousand words even though I have some 60 thousand words in the book and...

(pant pant)... I didn’t know how to stop that sentence... that’s how tired I am.

Anyway... Romy Malloy’s BRILLIANT DISGUISE really is coming soon.

In this first of the series Romy finds herself in the presence of a man from another dimension who needs her help to divert an inter-dimensional war, stop an assassination and find his way to a hidden portal to get back to his home dimension all within 24-hours or he will die. No pressure, right?

With the help of her head banging leather clad technician, a huge dog dumped on her by her ex-boyfriend who may just have hidden powers and a hardnosed St. Louis detective who has seen this type of thing before Romy has to decide on her priorities or risk losing a man worthy of her love.

AND... after that I will be releasing my 2nd Sci-Fi novel, the Culver Bishop story EVERY PURPOSE UNDER HEAVEN. This novel is being written right now and it’s shaping up to be about an 80-90 thousand word book (a little bigger than Romy’s first installment) and I gotta say I am LOVING writing this story.

As you may know the Culver story is set not too far in the future (the 2040’s) and things like technology and science have advanced enormously due to the evolution of a technocratic government. Because of major civil unrest and terrorist activity the major cities (like Atlanta where the story begins) have been cordoned off and surrounded by high security walls that allow the scientists to stay in and the general population to stay out.

Culver is a nano-biologist with a dream of creating synthetic nerve-cells from nano tech in order to cure multiple degenerative diseases. She is given the opportunity to work on an elevated space platform to complete her work in near-zero gravity.

OH! And don't forget to check out a little of my own homegrown Epic Fantasy in THE PLOTTERS OF CANTAERA available here:

So... there you have it: A bit of an update on where I have been and what I have been doing and on what will be coming out of my little corner of the world in the near future. That’s about all I have the energy for today. Perhaps a second breakfast and an afternoon nap are in order.

I sincerely hope ALL IS WELL with you and your family and I thank you for reading and sharing here on The Multiverse! And if I don’t see you before the day... Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!
